Earth 2.75 Continued

Last night as my wife Adele and I wound down the day, and began readying our son Jake for bed the doorbell rang. It didn’t ring the typical one time, whoever was there gave two quick rings grabbing our attention. We all sprang up , Jake and I headed for the door. Upon opening the door there was a young man with a bandanna on his head, a tie dyed t-shirt beneath his button down, jeans and sandals. He quickly went into his pitch…

“Hi I’m Robert from Citizens Campaign for the environment…,” he said.

“I know the organization, how can we help you,” I quickly interjected.

With that Jake trotted off and Robert continued on with his message. Shortly thereafter Jake returned. As he approached us again, I couldn’t help but chuckle. Here was Jake clad in his almost ready to go to bed attire; a pull up diaper (he’s almost fully trained – yea), his sleeveless t-shirt from the day, his “me’s” pacifier and blanket, along with his tussled dirty blonde hair. Upon his arrival Jake interrupted us…

“Dad, ” he said.

“Yes Jake,” I answered.

“We have to take care of the earth,” he retorted.

“You’re right Jake, thanks for sharing that,” I said.

He trotted off again while Robert and I returned to our conversation.
In another moment he was back.

“Dad,” he said.

Yes Jake,” I answered.

“Recycling is good, we have to recycle,” he said.

“That’s right Jake, thanks for sharing that too,” I told him as he trotted off one more time.

I said to Robert “I couldn’t have scripted that.”

Adele joined us and we finished our business. Yes, we wrote the requested letters to our politicians.

For a moment I had thought Adele was sending him out with the lines, but as I entered the house I saw he was in between shows on noggin and repeating what they said in their earth segment.

Jake’s line weren’t just words though. Our night ended with a quick trip to the recycling pails out by the curb, with his before bedtime ensemble and all.

As we got to the pails Jake said, “We’re recycling , right Dad?”

“Yes, “ I answered.

“That’s good for the earth,” he remarked and we headed in for the night.
